Mission
The National Academy of Construction honors outstanding construction industry leaders and shares their collective experiences and expertise to help the Nation by improving their industry.
Vision
To drive improvement in the construction industry through sharing our collective knowledge and expertise.
Purpose
The purpose of the Academy is to establish a body of acknowledged construction industry leaders and to provide them recognition through election to the National Academy of Construction. It also offers their collective experience and expertise for the improvement of the industry. The Academy shows recognition to fresh and novel industry achievement with appropriate awards programs. Another important purpose of the Academy is to provide a network system of linkage between past and present participants in the construction industry.
We are Leaders Among Leaders
The Academy membership currently numbers over 400 professionals. Today’s members have made significant contributions in the areas of technology, alternative contracting and project delivery procedures, work processes, safety, industry image, workforce development, labor relations, construction tools, communication methods, construction law, higher education, and cost and schedule management effectiveness. Being elected to NAC membership, for most members, is not their first highly esteemed national honor. It would be an exception to elect a member whose résumé includes an outstanding accomplishment on a single project or achievements of significance within a single company, agency, or university. Our members have led and been directly involved with many of the most iconic projects constructed in North America and globally over the past half-century.View Members Directory
Contributing Our Expertise
Many national and federal entities seek out the expertise of NAC members to work on issues of importance. NAC members currently are serving in leadership and advisory roles with such groups as the National Academy of Engineering, the Federal Facilities Council, the National Transportation Research Board, the National Academies’ Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment (BICE), the boards and advisory councils of almost all construction and design professional societies, and others. Many NAC members also serve on corporate boards or as consultants to private and public agencies.
As a strategic initiative, the NAC has established formal collaborative relationships with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), National Academy of Public Administrators (NAPA), Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB), Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), the Construction Industry Institute (CII), the American College of Construction Lawyers (ACCL), and the National Academies’ Board on infrastructure and the Constructed Environment (BICE). Other relationships are being explored.
The Academy has also convened a dozen symposia over the past decade, bringing together stakeholders to address industry issues such as workforce development, industry image, safety, and use of best practices. Most recently the NAC Safety Committee convened five successful symposia at universities across the U.S. focused on introducing safety culture into undergraduate curricula in engineering and construction programs. Other initiatives are in development through our committees as we continue to be aggressive, self-directed, nationally prominent, and an influential force for improvement.
The Future: Focus on the Mission
NAC is moving into its 25th year of existence and is making a difference in the industry through its Executive Insights, Get the kNACk podcasts, and Ask Me Anything webinars, by convening symposia on issues of importance, and lending its expertise to address a variety of challenges that the industry is facing. As NAC heads into its next 25 years, it holds enormous promise to help our nation by driving improvement in the construction industry and at the same time helping prepare the next generation of leaders in our industry as they confront a changing world.
The pillars of NAC’s future are extraordinary leaders, a membership representing the breadth and diversity of industry stakeholders, and a passion for action and integrity. We are leaders among leaders!
