Bill Brubaker
William W. (Bru) Brubaker worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before he moved to National Aeronautics and Space Administration Headquarters to later become director of Facilities Engineering for NASA. In 2001, he became director of Facilities Engineering & Operations for the Smithsonian Institution. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia and a master’s in civil engineering from Georgia Tech. He also holds an MSBA from Boston University. Bru is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
He is past president of the National Academy of Construction (2010); past chair of the Construction Industry Institute; and past vice-chair of the Federal Facilities Council for the National Research Council. He is also former chair of the advisory committee for the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Virginia. He has received many awards, including the Presidential Meritorious Senior Executive Award in 2001. He was recognized as Federal Engineer of the Year in 1997 by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). He was selected as the 2011 Distinguished Alumni, University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Bru and his wife, Sandy, have a daughter, Taralyn, who works for VISA, and a son, Billy, a civil engineer graduate of Virginia Tech, who now works with the U.S. State Department.
