William A. Brookshire
William A. Brookshire passed away on April 21, 2017, at his beloved home near Lufkin, Texas.
At the National Academy of Construction, he was a Silver Life Member and was extremely honored to be selected for membership to NAC. At his induction to NAC in 2002, it was noted that he was a leader in applying technology, project execution and excellence, and personal integrity to the engineering and construction industry.
Affectionately known as Dr. B, he attended Kilgore College for one year before transferring to the University of Houston, where he received his BS degree in chemical engineering in 1957. He went on to earn MS and PhD degrees in chemical engineering at Louisiana State University.
Bill loved to fish and hunt. A friend who shared these sportsmen’s passions was James G. Slaughter, Sr. While out enjoying their favorite activities outdoors, the two men often discussed owning their own company someday. Both had good careers they were growing into, but the dream they shared was strong. In 1967, they both walked away from the security of their jobs and co-founded S&B Engineers. They had little money and no work, but they were determined to make their dream come true. And it did. At the time of his passing, Bill also was Chairman of the Board of Managers of Ford, Bacon & Davis LLC.
He demanded excellence from each of his employees, but not without first demanding it of himself. He believed in hard work and integrity in both his personal and business life. To those who knew him well, he was a very intense person. His word was his bond, his integrity beyond reproach. He led S&B Engineers and Constructors to excel, particularly in process excellence, construction safety, project execution, and ethics. The company family, which includes FB&D, is a multi-national, multi-company business that now employs over 5,000 people.
Bill served with distinction in many capacities in industry societies and groups. He was a Registered Professional Engineer, and a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, the Louisiana Society of Professional Engineers, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). He served on the Rice University Engineering Board of Review and on the UH College of Technology Board of Industrial Advisors. He was a past member of the Government Programs Steering Committee of the AIChE and a past Vice Chairman of the AIChE Engineering and Construction Contracting Division (ECC) Executive Board. In 1998, he was honored by the ECC with its Division Award, recognizing him as a key industry leader for outstanding achievements and contributions to the engineering and construction industry.
Bill highly valued education and had a profound impact on students, faculty, and universities. He worked to put himself through college. He earned a fellowship from Humble Oil that helped him get through graduate school. This inspired him to help others get an education, and ultimately led to his creation of The William A. Brookshire Foundation, which provides scholarships for college and graduate students, the greatest number of whom are children and grandchildren of the S&B/FB&D family. The Brookshire Foundation, thanks to the foresight and generosity of Bill, will continue its support for students, many of whom could not go to college without its help.
Bill stands as one of the top contributors in UH history. Since 2010, 267 UH Cullen College of Engineering students finished their junior and senior years on full scholarships as a result of his generosity. He was selected into the UH Cullen College of Engineering Hall of Distinction in 1989 and was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus is 2016.
He gave immensely to LSU as well. The Brookshire Scholarship in Engineering, established at LSU in 2010, is given to full-time undergraduate students who have a combined work and coursework schedule of more than 30 hours per week. The scholarship has been awarded to over 750 students. In addition, the Brookshire Crisis Fund began in 2012 as a financial way to help students experiencing an unforeseen event that severely impedes their ability to continue their education. Recently after a flood, more than 60 students were given financial assistance through the crisis fund he created.
Bill also established a fund for LSU faculty. The William A. Brookshire Award for Teaching Excellence honors full-time faculty members in the College of Engineering who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to exemplifying the highest levels of excellence in the classroom. In addition, the William A. Brookshire Graduate Assistantship in Chemical Engineering provides support to doctoral students and assists the Cain Department of Chemical Engineering in attracting top postgraduate students. He has also made an impact on LSU at-large through gifts for the renovation of Memorial Tower, the construction of a new Military and Veterans Students Center, and the renovation and expansion of Patrick F. Taylor Hall. He was inducted into the LSU College of Engineering Hall of Distinction in 2012-2013.
Dr. B was always concerned for the long-term success of his companies and the employees who worked there. Because of his tremendous care in founding the companies with integrity and ethics, he prepared S&B and FB&D and the thousands who work there to continue the outstanding work these companies have been known for since 1967, a fifty-year legacy. His legacy of hard work, striving for excellence, educational support, and standing for strong ethical principles will continue to be the overriding hallmarks for which the family of companies stands.
Left to cherish his memory are daughter Lori Garrison and her husband John, son Brook Brookshire and his wife, Julie, and daughter, Crissy. Also surviving him are his grandchildren Connor and Caroline Garrison and Will Brookshire.
