Stephen R. Thomas
Stephen R. (Steve) Thomas is retired associate director, research, academic, and breakthrough, at the Construction Industry Institute (CII). He is a graduate of and a former faculty member at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He received his master’s and PhD from The University of Texas at Austin, and joined CII as its director of benchmarking and metrics in 1998.
After 10 years leading CII benchmarking, he became the CII research director, where he was responsible for an annual research budget of $2.5 million. He was involved with more than 20 universities in the U.S. and Canada and more than 3,000 industry professionals.
Steve also is a research associate professor in the UT Austin Cockrell School of Engineering, where he teaches courses in project management and economics, probability and statistics, quantitative methods for project analysis, developing effective project teams, and metrics.
He is active in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Construction Research Council, serves as an executive advisory board member to the Project Management Institute (PMI) Design-Procure-Construct Community of Practice, and has worked in several areas for the National Research Council (NRC). He is a recipient of the PMI Donald S. Barrie Award.
Steve is married to Odette, and they have two sons and two grandchildren.
