Stephen T. Ayers
Stephen T. Ayers, Architect of the Capitol (ret.), has emphasized sustainability, energy efficiency, and renewal of infrastructure in his responsibility to protect and enhance some of America’s greatest structural assets, including buildings, works of art, and other architectural elements of the Capitol grounds. He joined the Architect of the Capitol in 1997. His career has been one of public service, beginning with his commission as a U.S. Air Force officer in 1984. He later joined Voice of America, where he led design and construction efforts for VOA in Greece and Germany.
He is the recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. He also is the recipient of the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence from the Construction Industry Institute. He is an active member of the American Institute of Architects; the National Trust for Historic Preservation; the Construction Users Roundtable; the Construction Management Association of America; the Building Owners and Management Association; the International Facility Management Association; the National Institute of Building Sciences; the International Association of Museum Facility Administrators; and the ACE Mentor Program.
Stephen is married to Jennifer and they have two children, Stephanie and Nick.
