Sean McGarvey
Sean McGarvey is president of the North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU). He holds a bachelor’s degree from the National Labor College and is a graduate of the Harvard University Trade Union Program. He represents 14 international unions throughout the U.S. He has been appointed by presidents of both parties to serve on various commissions. He is well respected by labor, government, corporate, and private sector leaders.
Sean began his construction career in 1981 in Philadelphia as a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. In 2005, he became NABTU’s chief financial officer and president in 2012. He has helped to transform the organization’s strategic focus and influence. Under his leadership, NABTU has led the way in innovative workforce development programs to prepare the next generation of craft professionals for successful careers in the construction industry. He also supports women in construction, helping increase the most recent apprenticeship programs to have 25 percent women graduates.
Another area he is involved in is Helmets to Hardhats, which helps military veterans transition to the civilian workforce. He currently is co-chair of the Oil and Natural Gas Industry Labor-Management Committee, a unique partnership between NABTU and the American Petroleum Institute.
