Richard L. Tucker
Richard L. Tucker is a charter member of the National Academy of Construction. He earned bachelor, master’s, and PhD degrees in civil engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. In 1999, he led the formation of the National Academy of Construction.
He is the founding general secretary of the National Academy of Construction, and professor emeritus and the Joe C. Walter Jr. Chair Emeritus in the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT Austin. He was instrumental in The Business Roundtable Construction Committee’s Construction Industry Cost Effectiveness (CICE) Project from 1978-82.
He personally led the effort to create the Construction Industry Institute (CII), and served as CII director from its founding in 1983 until his retirement as director in 1998. He is a member of many prestigious industry groups, sits on numerous executive boards, and is a consultant to both public and private sector interests.
Richard is the recipient of the Construction Industry Institute’s highest honor, the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence. He also was honored by CII with the Ronald Reagan Award for Individual Initiative. Among his many honors is the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Peurifoy Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
He and his wife, Shirley, have two children, Bryan and Karen, and four grandchildren. The couple lives in Austin, TX.
