Michael A. Mooney
Mike Mooney is the Bruce E. Grewcock Distinguished Chair Professor of Underground Construction & Tunneling at Colorado School of Mines, in Golden, CO. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Hastings College, a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Washington University (St. Louis), a master’s in civil engineering from UC-Berkeley, and a PhD in civil engineering from Northwestern University. He has made significant technical contributions in both underground and earthwork construction. At the Colorado School of Mines, he created and is the director of the Center of Excellence in Underground Construction & Tunneling, which he established to pursue advances in underground construction. He also led the development of the Underground Construction & Tunnel Engineering graduate degree program. Mike has advanced the understanding of the extremely complex tunnel boring machine construction processes. He has been involved in such iconic tunneling projects as Seattle’s SR99 tunnel project, the Great Lakes Tunnel Project, and the Venice, Italy, lagoon restoration project. ASCE honored him with the Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award in 2024. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Colorado.
