Michael C. Vorster
Michael C. (Mike) Vorster is the David H. Burrows Professor Emeritus of Construction Engineering and Management at Virginia Tech. He holds bachelor and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a PhD in civil engineering from the University of Stellenbosch in Matieland, South Africa.
Mike began his career in industry as a construction engineer, but joined academia after several years. He was initially a senior lecturer and assistant director of the graduate school of business at the University of Cape Town, rising to become professor and head of the department of civil engineering there. In the mid-1980s, he joined the faculty at Virginia Tech. He has been honored many times for his outstanding contributions to construction engineering and management education.
He is the recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Peurifoy Construction Research Award and the ASCE Thomas Fitch Rowland Prize, the Virginia Tech Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Construction Industry Institute (CII) Outstanding Researcher Award, among his many honors.
