Michael P. Lewis
Michael P. (Mike) Lewis is deputy executive director and chief operating officer, Colorado Department of Transportation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Vermont.
Beginning in 1992, Mike became involved in the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston. For the next 15 years, he served in various positions on the Big Dig, ultimately becoming project director from 2000-2007. He was responsible for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority’s management of all aspects of design, construction, and maintenance for the $14.8 billion project. He led multi-discipline teams to develop unique design solutions on complex geometric, geotechnical, and structural challenges in an historic urban setting. He also used dispute review boards, arbitration, and innovative technologies in the landmark project. He led the development of the project’s finance plan, later described as a “national model.”
From 2008-2015, he was director, Rhode Island Department of Transportation. He received the Move Massachusetts 2000 Engineering Achievement Award, the National Engineers Week-Boston Achievement Award, and the Boston Engineering Center Leadership Award.
Mike is married to Arna, and they have three grown children. They enjoy the Rocky Mountains, hiking, and biking.
