Michael (Mike) Johnson
Michael R. (Mike) Johnson served in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps/Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) from 1970-2004, retiring as chief in 2003. He then assumed his current position in March 2004 as associate chancellor for facilities at the University of Arkansas, retiring in April, 2021 as Emeritus. He also assumed the role of Professor, Civil Engineering in 2010, retiring in 2021 as Emeritus. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Colorado, a bachelor of arts in economics from Chapman College, and both a master’s in public works and a master’s in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
During his tenure as commander of NAVFAC, Mike introduced the use of design-build among several innovations in contracting strategy. Design-build now comprises over 60 percent of the NAVFAC military construction program.
Mike is a Registered Civil Engineer and has been an active member of several professional societies. He was president of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) in 2003-2004.
He and Terry, his wife of 46 years, have a daughter, Jessica and her family, who live in Annapolis, MD, and a son, Shawn and his family, who live in Asheville, NC. They currently have four grandchildren: Hale and Kate with Jessica and Fraser and Boone and Barrett with Shawn and Halley.
