Michael Garvin
Mike Garvin is a professor and coordinator of the Vecellio Construction Engineering & Management Program at Virginia Tech. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and earned master’s and PhD degrees from MIT. He served as a combat engineer platoon leader with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in both Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Mike is a well-known expert in alternative project delivery methods, particularly public-private partnerships. His academic career began as an assistant professor at Columbia University in 2001. In 2005, he joined the faculty at Virginia Tech. His research work includes projects for the National Science Foundation, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Virginia Department of Transportation. He has authored more than 140 technical publications and received a best journal paper award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Virginia Tech has recognized him with several honors, including for teaching excellence, leadership, and service.
