Michael J. Choutka
Mike Choutka is chair and CEO of Hensel Phelps in Greeley, CO. He earned a bachelor’s degree in construction management at the University of Nebraska. At Hensel Phelps, his career spans 33 years, beginning as a field engineer and rising to his current position as chair/CEO. Mike has guided the firm to its place as one of the top 11 building contractors in the U.S. He has created a safety culture that is consistent on every project through three principal actions: leadership involvement, engaging all employees and stakeholders, and recognizing people for the things they do well every day. He is a founding board member of AEC Unites, which provides opportunities for Black talent and Black-owned businesses in the industry. He is active in the Construction Industry Roundtable and the ACE Mentor Program. In 2019, the University of Nebraska Durham School of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction recognized him with its Outstanding Alumni Award. In 2021, Safety Health honored him with its CEOs Who Get It Award in recognition of his advancing safety both within the company and within the industry.
