ERIC MACFARLANE
Eric Macfarlane leads the New York City Department of Design and Construction, Infrastructure Division, with a technical staff of 500 engineers, project managers, and analysts. He has a bachelor of engineering degree from City College of New York and a master’s in civil engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York.
His division is responsible for the design and construction management of the capital infrastructure programs for the city: the storm drainage system, consolidated roadways, sanitary sewers, the water distribution network, and various urban landscape improvements. Currently the division has a five-year capital portfolio of 625 projects in various phases valued at more than $10 billion, a record. Three specific projects Eric led illustrate his effectiveness, vision, and hands-on approach. First, the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project, which will protect 110,000 citizens with reduced flood risk as well as enhanced waterfront and urban spaces. Second, the reconstruction of iconic Times Square doubled the amount of pedestrian-only space and gave new life to the area. Third, his team transformed the Plaza de las Americas that is now a magnet for festivals and music concerts. Eric is a licensed Professional Engineer in New York State.
