John I. Messner
John Messner is the Charles and Elinor Matts Professor of Architectural Engineering and the Director of the Computer Integrated Construction Research Program at Penn State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering (BAE) and a PhD degree from Penn State. John specializes in Building Information Management (BIM), digital twin, lean construction, and automation in construction research. His research team developed several core BIM planning guidelines incorporated into the U.S. National BIM Standard. He has received multiple National Science Foundation grants to investigate the application of immersive technologies in the AEC Industry and construction.
John chaired the U.S. National BIM Standard initiative in the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), is a Board of Directors member of the Lean Construction Institute, previously chaired the ASCE Computing Division, and is a faculty member in the Partnership for Achieving Construction Excellence. He received the 2021 Distinguished Service Award from NIBS and the ASCE 2022 Computing in Civil Engineering Award.
John is happily married to Anne, and they have three sons, Isaac, Joe, and Jacob.
