James M. Owendoff
Jim Owendoff is the chief risk officer in the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of the Chief Financial Officer. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and a master’s of engineering degree from Cornell University.
From 1995-2003 and 2005-2018, he served in various capacities in the Office of Environmental Management, including as the acting assistant secretary, principal deputy assistant secretary, chief operations officer, deputy assistant secretary for environmental restoration, deputy assistant secretary for science and technology, and chief office of project recovery. He also served in the DOE Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management from 2003-2005 as the associate director for integration.
Prior to his appointment in the DOE and his retirement from active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Jim served in the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security and served as chief of the Air Force Environmental Restoration Division. These assignments followed a series of successively responsible leadership positions during his 25-year career in the U.S. Air Force, which included assignments throughout the United States and overseas in the civil engineering career field.
