James H. Anspach
Jim Anspach is an affiliate assistant professor at Iowa State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in geologic sciences from Penn State University. Jim is considered the “Godfather of Subsurface Utility Engineering” and has developed the practice, served on many research projects, and lectured at numerous universities around the world.
He began his career at Heath Consultants as a field engineer in 1978, and moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1983. There he developed the field of subsurface utility engineering with So-Deep, Inc. He has led the utility mapping and coordination engagements for hundreds of projects, including several transportation mega-projects on both coasts. Jim is a Distinguished Member of ASCE. He served as a founding governor and 2018 president of the Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute. He is currently developing a graduate studies program in utility engineering at Iowa State, serves as an expert in construction cases, and works with utility technology start-ups around the world.
He is married to Laura, where they have a horse farm in Sisters, OR.
