Jesus M. de la Garza
Jesus M. de la Garza is Professor and Director of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University. Prior to Clemson, Dr. de la Garza was the Vecellio Professor of Construction Engineering and Management at Virginia Tech, where he joined the faculty in 1988 after receiving master’s and PhD degrees at the University of Illinois. He has been active in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), and the Construction Industry Institute (CII). His aggressive research portfolio has been funded by numerous agencies.
He served three years as director of the Information Technology and Infrastructure Systems Program at NSF, and has been member of the NRC Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment. He received the Faculty of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter at Virginia Tech and serves as faculty advisor to the Virginia Tech CMAA student chapter.
He and Bertha have two daughters, Lorena and Cecilia; both are both biology majors. His great-grandfather was crew chief for building railroad bridges and his grandfather was his deputy.
