Dan M. Frangopol
Dan M. Frangopol is the inaugural holder of the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture at Lehigh University. He earned a civil engineering degree from the Institute of Civil Engineering in Bucharest, Romania, and received his doctorate in applied sciences from the University of Liège, Belgium.
Dan is a pioneer in the field of life-cycle civil engineering. His approach integrates life-cycle cost, safety, and optimal management of civil infrastructure. In 2010, the ASCE named him a Distinguished Member and noted that his work “has not only saved time and money, but very likely also saved lives.”
He has been elected to the Academy of Europe, the Royal Academy of Belgium, the Engineering Academy of Japan, and the Romanian Academy. He has been recognized with awards from ASCE, including the Newmark, Freudenthal, Housner, and Croes medals; the Ang, Howard, Moisseiff, and Lifetime Achievement in Education (OPAL) awards; and the Noble, Reese, and Wellington Prizes. Dan is the founding president of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE). He is also the founding editor-in-chief of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering, a leading peer-reviewed journal.
