Don J. Gunther
Don J. Gunther is a charter member of the National Academy of Construction. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla. He served in the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, where he achieved the rank of second lieutenant with the Construction Engineering Battalion.
Don’s extraordinary 37-year career with Bechtel began in 1961, when he joined the company as a field engineer. He continued on at the executive leadership level, and personally helped build many of Bechtel’s signature projects, established some of its most important customer relationships, and was a driving force behind the company becoming the number one engineering and construction contractor in two hemispheres. Most importantly, his personal example of dedication and team-based, results-oriented leadership is a permanent role model for Bechtel leaders.
He chaired the 1990 Construction Industry Institute (CII) Annual Conference and served as a member of the AIChE. He was awarded CII’s highest honor, the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence, in 1999.
He and his wife, Mosey, live in Naples, Florida. Their four children are all grown.
