David Woods is executive director of the Beavers, Inc., a heavy engineering and construction association, and the Beavers Charitable Trust. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and business management from the University of California, Davis. He oversees the Beavers day-to-day operations; the trust maintains endowed civil engineering and construction management scholarships at 40 universities.
David began his career in 1975 in sales on the Alaskan Oil Pipeline project. He became an associate editor the next year and eventually rose to be editor and publisher of California Builder & Engineer, a 100-year old trade journal covering the western U.S. After 20 years as a writer/editor covering the industry, he became western regional manager for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association.
He joined the Beavers in 1999. He is known for his knowledge of the industry and his ability to communicate about it. Importantly, he has led the Beavers Charitable Trust in funding professorship grants and student scholarships with over $1 million per year. This enables university teaching to connect with real-world projects and the leaders of tomorrow, the students, to pursue a career in heavy construction.
