David W. Johnston
David W. Johnston is the Edward I. Weisiger Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Construction Engineering and Management at North Carolina State University. He earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from North Carolina State University.
He joined the NC State University faculty in 1977 and served in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering until his retirement in 2010. His research areas include construction engineering, construction management, bridge management systems, and structural engineering. He is author of the 8th edition of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) SP-4 design manual, Formwork for Concrete.
David is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a Fellow of ACI. He also is a Professional Engineer in North Carolina, and previously in New York, and Connecticut. He has served as an evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Engineering Accreditation Commission and chairs the Construction Engineering Professional Engineer (PE) Exam Module Subcommittee for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
He has been honored many times and is the recipient of the ACI Construction Practice Award, the ACI Delmar Bloem Award, and the ASCE Roebling Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of construction engineering.
David and Brenda, married in 1969, have two daughters and two granddaughters.
