Charles D. Brown
Charles “Charlie” D. Brown is a charter member of the National Academy of Construction. He joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and served as a sergeant with the occupation forces in Japan until 1947. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Arkansas.
In 1951, he began his long and productive career with DuPont in Orange, Texas, later retiring as Vice President – Engineering. Charlie was Chairman of The Business Roundtable Construction Committee and its Construction Industry Cost Effectiveness (CICE) study. That study offered over 200 recommendations as to how the construction industry could improve itself, and led to the formation of the Construction Industry Institute. His role in the CICE effort and his leadership for decades at DuPont earned him CII’s highest honor, the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence, the second person to be recognized with the award after Carroll H. Dunn was honored with the initial award that bears his name.
