Bernard Amadei
Bernard Amadei is professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado-Boulder. He received his PhD in 1982 from the University of California-Berkeley. He holds the Mortenson Chair in Global Engineering at CU-Boulder and directs the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities.
Bernard has shifted from being a pure academic to being a leader interested in making a difference. He stresses sustainable community development to his students, and that work includes planning, priority setting, project assessment and definition, project design, material takeoffs, sourcing, logistics, workforce training, fundraising, construction, commissioning, and life cycle maintenance and repair.
As founding president of Engineers Without Borders-USA and co-founder of Engineers Without Borders-International, Bernard has transformed engineering education. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his work in rock mechanics, sustainability, and the creation of Engineers Without Borders -USA. He is the 2007 recipient of the Heinz Award for the Environment, and in 2008 received the Award of Excellence from ENR. He holds four honorary doctoral degrees. In 2012, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton appointed him as one of three new U.S. science envoys mandated to assist in strengthening U.S. ties with other countries.
